Macross Frontier 17 - The Fake Folker

They try to pull a fast one in this episode, which we'll get to in a minute. But from the start you knew they were up to something, especially with the new art style.

We'll save millions on labor alone!

That's just the new opening animation, and I'm pretty sure it's a one time thing. So the story continues after Ranka's battle debut, moving on to her real debut. Leaving off last week (show time, not post time) with Ranka doubting her mission, she turns to her boy toy for guidance. If he can sneak past her retinue.

Inspector Gadget?

Remember that during a serendipitous rendezvous in a ladies room, be sure to respect her wishes.

Not that that will be too hard...here's what we have to work with.

You can't have too many stuffed animals

Meanwhile, Luca and Leon are discussing stuff about the Vajra that actually helps explain what's going on. Like why they have been harvesting dead Vajra and what they might do with them.

This explains a lot - for once

While Luca might have a clue what's going on, and Leon seems to have his own agenda, Ozma and Kathy are still in the dark, so Ozma attempts to break in to the Vajra processing facility. He doesn't quite make it.

Not good

Wasn't this guy suppose to be watching Ranka, not defending random military facilities? Lucky for Ozma, he's reminded of this fact by a phone call.

I'm kind of in the middle of killing a secondary character, can I get back to you?

The call is to inform Mr. "I got a phone in my head" that the Vajra are attacking once again. Everyone scrambles, with a "You don't tell anyone I tried to break in, and I won't tell anyone you tried to kill me" agreement or something. But wait, why won't our guns work? Our Reflex missiles are useless? What could be going on?

Well that's just GREAT

So these bugs just keep developing defenses against whatever we throw at them, and so far the only thing left are the beam weapons from the Galaxy. But of course they don't deploy them until one breaks through and almost takes out the SMS battleship, giving Ozma the chance to be all cool and stuff by intercepting the shot.

Is there something on my face? There's something on my face, isn't there?

This gives Ozma the chance to get all cool on us.

His crew approves.

So rock and roll, in fact, that they are willing to follow him into battle...with knives...

But they're SPACE KNIVES!

So battle over, and everyone makes it back safe and sound in time for Ranka's concert.  Except that if you are a child of the eighties who woke up every morning at 5:55 AM to watch Robotech, you know what the following means.

Two words - Pineapple Salad

Hell, they even talk about pineapple cake in the beginning of the episode (which I just realized typing this, yes I'm slow).  If you still don't know what I'm talking about, this is all an homage to the death of this guy in the original Macross, Roy Folker.

The Original Chuck Norris

And thus this comes as no surprise.

It's only a (large) flesh wound!

This looks like the long goodnight for our brave pilot.

Or not.

I kind of have to agree

They played that one right up to the end.  Points for style, minus several million for originality, lack there of.  You can almost see the writers giggling as they watch this episode getting produced, thinking "I can't believe we got this one through!".  So it's not terrible, but a definite groaner to go all the way there and then yank back on the angst chain.  I just wonder if they'll ever kill anyone in this show.  And no, I haven't seen Episode 20 yet, why?
