To Aru Majutsu no Index 14 - In Which I Use My 8 Years of Undergraduate Education To Explain Why This Episode Is Messed Up

[Ed Note - I'm just going to jump back in as if I've been reviewing this show all along, cause really, if you were getting all your info about any show from me, you are missing the point]

This week, we conclude the battle between a guy who can accelerate anything and a guy who can cancel magic with his right hand.  Considering he should be able to just accelerate a steel beam thought Toma's head, and since a steel beam is not magic there should be nothing he can do, I'm surprised it lasted this long.  But I was struck by the number of times my bachelors in physics made me realize how unrealistic this episode it.

And be aware that complaining about realism in a Japanese animated TV show makes me a tool, but I need something to write about.

For example, my Biology education says this is just wrong

The methodology that makes it even possible that Toma could win this is the following:

1) Accelerator guy moves himself real fast

2) He flings himself at Toma

3) Toma punches him

Lather Rinse Repeat

So let me hit you with an equation - E=0.5*mv^2, as in the kinetic energy (E) is equal to the mass time the square of the velocity of a body.  So even if Toma just holds his fist out in front of him, that initial hit should have snapped his head off. The rest is just for dramatic effect.

Now the only reason Toma is even standing (for the most part) is the fact that Mr Accelerator is a bit of a prick, and has to come up with something special to finish him off.  Enter the Plasma.

And he's going to do what with it exactly?

This one I think is a complete fabrication.  Plasma is essentially super heated gas, so I guess you could argue that he has accelerated the particles in the air to such a speed that they are creating enough heat to create the plasma.  In that case, however, his face should be melting.

Finally, we have the mystery of electricity.

Special, in this case, equals any

Misaka uses a magnetic field to reverse the rotation of the windmills around town and disturb the air flow so the already previously dis-proven plasma ball breaks up.  In fact, all electric motors can rotate the other way if you just reverse the polarity of the electricity, so in fact this one is plausible.  Most motors have mechanical means to prevent this from happening (they only rotate one way) and don't get me started about what would happen if you forced a windmill to rotate backwards.

So, since this is the show where science and magic collide, the collision leads to one of Toma's punches connecting with something vital.  In the end, it lands him at his home away from home, the hospital.  Which also leads to a great subber shortcut.

Mi X5 = Mi Mi Mi Mi Mi ie He's stuttering.  Was that really worth the effort?

In effect, Toma is now the savior of 10,000 Misakas, though I get the impression only this one is out of storage and free to wander around.  Such as it is - just to be melancholy, she points out she is an unstable clone that may or may not have all that much time left. Masaka also stops by, but she remains her same cold self.  You would think having a guy save you and your 10K sisters would endear you to them (and to be truthful, she softens a little, I just would have liked to see more development there).

And finally, any remember this chick?

WHERE? HAVE? YOU? BEEN?

I'm curious now that we have all the characters in place where this show is going.  Lots of one shot episodes?  A final story arch?  Toma gets him memory back?  The next episode preview gives a clue, as everyone seems to end up at the beach!  They gotta do that episode in every series, it's in the contract.
