Toradora 20 - They All Need to DIAF
Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 10:54PM
The characters of Toradora are falling apart. I thought from the last episode that we were working out the personalities, but it looks like they are trying to hang on to the status quo. And like a tectonic plate, the longer it takes for the inevitable to snap into place, the worse the shock is going to be. And therefore, I present to you just why and how much each of these people deserve to Die...In A Fire!

Yes you are
We need to start with Taiga, whos brillant idea starts the whole sorted affair.

This is your plan?
Last week, Taiga broke down realizing how much she needs Ryuji and depends on him. So she twists that into her holding back the Ryuji/Minori pairing because Minori doesn't want to get between them. Denial - it's not just a river in a cheesey coloqialism. I thought the fiercely independent Taiga had finally realized she can depend on another human being, but instead she completely represses that instinct and finds an excuse to push Ryuji away. Dumb dumb dumb.
Fire Level = Joan Of Arc
Kitamura also seems to have a part to play.

His part in this melodrama isn't immediately clear, but I think Taiga has asked him to join her in the plan to isolate Ryuji so Minori has to pay attention to him. It's unclear how that's going to help anything, but the whole thing is pretty messed up to start with. I'm kind of hoping this is the weak point in the plan, and Kitamura sabatoges everything to get Taiga and Ryuji back together. But if he is going along with this, he needs to burn.
Fire Level = Camp Fire
Ami, as usual, sees right through everything.

I have to admit, this is probably the most obvious she's been about trying to steer Ryuji away from the collision course with disaster, but my point has always been that she's still not helping. Not that it would help to tell his denseness anything too obvious, but I don't like that she seems to be enjoying the pain she shes coming. Unfortunately, she is also the only one being true to her nature, so she probably deserves the least scorn.
Fire Level = Open Candle Flame
Minori is the weirdest of the bunch

This is her response after Taiga abandons her with Ryuji, and that's pretty dark. Minori has gone total psycoid, trying to maintain her happy go lucky ditz personality while at the same time suppressing her feelings for Ryuji for Taiga's benefit. This would mess anyone up, if I believed she was stable in the first place. I can't tell if she's uniquely eccentric or totally wacko, to be honest. Right now, she's the one closest to breaking, and it's just going to take one of these people to finally drop their act to set off a waterfall of suffering. As if my analogies aren't suffering enough.
Fire Level = Incinerator
I don't even know who this chick is.

But she's real annoying, and very late to the party. Could she be set up as an unseen spoiler who is the trigger for the whole facade to come crashing down during the class trip? I don't know, but she bugs me.
Fire Level = Bonfire
Finally, the piece de resistance.

I can't believe Ryuji is going along with this. The male leads in these shows is supposed to be clueless, but this is way over the top. He has to see that both Taiga and Minori and going through a YOU'RE TEARING ME APART phase all because of him. I don't care why someone does it, but when a friend deliberately tried to distance themselves, you should have alarm bells aplenty going off. But Ryuji takes all this with uncharacteristic self-centeredness, assuming Taiga's plan is going to work. What he needs to realize is that if it does work, it will destroy Taiga. Not the move of a best friend and protector.
Fire Level = The Heat of A Thousand Burning Suns
I guess the new game should be to try and guess what bizarre event finally make Taiga realize how much she needs Ryuji, and get Ryuji to admit he cares about Taiga more than he lets on. My main fear is that someone is going to have to suffer for this, but this has never been a show afraid to show the reality of the situation. My current guess - Minori dies.
Stop looking at me like that...
