An Astronomy Club anime? If you knew my background, you would know this is an instant win for me. But a good academic anime needs to come with important life lessons, such as:

Saku has returned to the town he grew up in (Anime Starter Plot #12) with memories of a childhood friend, Mihoshi. His memories of her range from the traumatic,

This is kind of gender backwards
Saku dreads re-meeting Mihoshi, recalling the constant abuse she gave to his bookwormish quiet time. Her insistence the he come on her stargazing escapades caused him no end of grief. This means that they will meet up within 5 minutes of arriving at school.
Freakin lolis
Mihoshi, now a member of the astronomy club, obviously remembers their childhood differently.
I believe I can fly...
In a heartwarming scene, she recalls all the wonderful times they had as children, watching the stars and playing in the fields of their youth.
Saku remembers differently.
Nostalgia sucks
The rub here is that their mutual memory of what happened when Saku moved away is flawed. As the opening scene revealed, Mihoshi fell out of a tree, causing them both to end up in the hospital just before he moved. Saku was mad Mihoshi never visited him, when in truth she was in the hospital longer than him and never got the chance.
Guilt works every time
Once Saku realizes his mistake, he agrees to join the astronomy club - not on purpose, of course. But one way or another, he is now the 4th of the required 5 club members. The others are Sayo, generic high school girl (so far) and The President. The president fits just about any nerd sterotype you care to find, mostly the really bad health one.
Death warmed over
A good start, overall. I have to assume there will be a romantic sub-plot with Saku and Mihoshi, but I frankly don't see it. There is already a rival undertone with the student council president who hates the astronomy club, but shares Saku's love of books. Next episode introduces yet another love interest, but we'll save that.
This is turning into a busy season. I'm going to try to keep this near the top of my must watch list, so stay tuned.

Great post Jon! I have been following the #p2 effort since you started it, and although I have understood its purpose this post does a really great job solidifying the full rationale.
