Bakemonogatari Ep2 - Crabby

Bakemonogatari continues to deliver on amazing visuals and deep character development that makes me giddy with joy.  Experimental junk like this doesn't always work on me, but this show hits a hole in one for some reason.  This episode mixes some excellent verbal sparring with a mix of religion, horror and redemption.  The scariest part actually comes at the end...

That's just not natural

When we left Senjōgahara with Araragi and Oshino, he was giving her directions for what to do if she wanted his help getting her weight back.

I didn't think they were at the cold shower stage yet

The following 8 minutes demonstrates that while it's true girls can take forever to get ready, you may not want to watch it in real time.

It doesn't do us much good from back here

I want to talk a bit about the last shot and the next few.  Near as I can tell, she is living on the set of a theater covered in ancient newspapers.  This setting is just there, it's never mentioned, discussed or questioned.  It suggests Senjōgahara is a run-away or hinding out, but we'll have to touch on that later.

Senjōgahara next proves she's a real girl after all.

Am I right guys? Huh?

I can't really capture the back and forth between Senjōgahara and Araragi, but you get the feeling Araragi is just barely loosing an increasing difficult battle of wits.  Senjōgahara is pretty merciless.

For her, this is flirting

Back with Oshino, he explains how you deal with a crab god.

Oshino has a pretty intense alter set up, specifically for Senjōgahara's case.  The process is fairly Buddhist, answering a series of seemingly random questions.

I'll take traumatic events for $500 Alex

Oshino finally hits with this one.

Summary of painful memory - turns out mom was a cultist, and when leader of said cult assaulted Senjōgahara, she beat him senseless and mom was punished by the cult.  That ended up breaking up her family, and she has been living on her own ever sense.  These were the memories, or weight, that she asked the crab to take from her.  In realizing this, god is made manifest.

I'd crab my pants

Turns out crab gods can be a little too friendly.

They blew the budget for white on this one episode

Senjōgahara is caught by surprise, and while the original intent was to humbly kneel before god, Oshino has to change things up a bit.

Did he just Judo throw a god?

Senjōgahara, back on her feet, knows the drill, and goes the original humble route to take back the painful memories, now the only thing she has left of her monther.

I swear they changed voice actresses for her once she returns to normal, I didn't recognize her voice at first.  At the very least, Araragi gets some recognition.

Did she hit her head back there as well?

To be honest, Senjōgahara seems to come out the other side of this as the same person, so I'm not expecting Araragi's life to get any simpler.  And I expect this series to continue to wow with it's unique visuals and inventive story telling.  Loving every minute of it.
