The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Ep. 4 - Ohhhhhhhh
Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 02:36PM
I didn't blog about episode 2 of the new season because it didn't seem like there was much there. Summer memories, slice of life, all pretty cliche stuff before the new school year. I have had my faith restored in Haruhi, however, as we again see nothing is as it seems. As Kyon observes:

First clue - you're in this anime
So this is how episode 2 ends:

That's what you think
And episode four opens exactly the same as 2, with Kyon being "invited" to the pool by Haruhi. Plays out exactly the same as well, with Haruhi making a list of her summer desires. I think we know where this is going:

Ya think?
OK, pretty standard plot device here. Haruhi is creating the ultimate endless summer and the scooby gang is caught up in it. Luckily, we have someone who works outside of time and space, so maybe she can tell us what's going on. So Yuki, what, we've been here a dozen time? 20?

That's a large number...
Two weeks repeated 15K times - about 600 years. And Yuki has to remember each and every one. You neglected to mention this right away why?!? Yes, Yuki is purely an observer, and will only answer questions, which is why she never offers up any of this before Kyon and the others figure it out on their own. I'm guessing this isn't the first time they have figured this out either, but as this episode shows, they still have no clue what to do. Here's where my speculation engine kicks in...
Each trip ends with two important events - Haruhi claiming that they've done enough summer activities, and allowing everyone a day off before school starts. The one activity I can think of that she has never done in any of the 15,499 trips is the old summer romance. And with that day off, Kyon has the chance to fill in that gap.
1 episodes left in this arc, 1 run through until trip 15,500. Now is they can just convince Yuki to spill the beans early on, we might have a way out.
