Sora no Manimani Ep3&4 - Why Aren't You An Astronomer Yet?

A good anime usually has a background theme that follows along with the plot and character development.  Usually, the emphasis is on background.  The whole purpose of this show seems to be to present the majesty and wonder of the night sky, as character and plot take a back seat.  I am certain every day in this world starts out with this gag.

I wanna see Hime try to swallow her head...

Episode 3 finds Saku the center of the rumor mill thanks to all the attention Miho gives him.  Even the student council president is subject to suggestion.

Only if you count giving someone concussions as "making out"

The bookwormish Fumie can't understand why the equally bookwormish Saku is in the astronomy club rather than her literature club.  Saku recalls the childhood memories of discovery and exploration thanks to his involuntary star gazing trips.  Fumie for the most part just doesn't get it.

Can she get any closer to the end of that bench?

Back at the astronomy club, Miho is suffering under the Japanese rainy season, also known as spring.

Maybe because it's 4PM?

On a starless day, the best place to go is your local planetarium.  Show of hands - who out there even HAS a local planetarium anymore?

This looks like the start of a Scooby Doo episode

A note for the International Astronomical Union - Pluto is a planet you FREAKIN MOFOS!!!

Pour one out for my missing Pluto homee

Episode 4 starts the summer trip arc, and you can guess who is all up in this bidness.

By definition even!

As usual, Miho's hyper activity is misconstrued, and it's finally too much for Hime to take.

From stable to cracked in 4 episodes, a new record!

I smell a confession coming...

I small a gag coming...

In another anime, this would not be a good thing

The astronomy club arrives at their lakeside retreat, only to find They Are Not Alone.  No, it's not Jason, it's nerds.

Geek Fight!

Quick side note - what does a literature club DO at a lake side retreat?  Fumie is always on the astronomy club because they can't be active in the daytime, but what is the literature club going to do, read at you?  Just sayin...

The literature club gets to stay at the resort hotel up the road, while the smaller astronomy club gets to stay closer to the lake.  Maybe this is Crystal Lake...

I've seen worse

Daytime is nap time for astronomers, so we quietly await evening where Masashi demonstrates the time honored tradition of long exposure photography.  Although in a rather zen way.

I can assure you this pose is not required for astrophotography

The rest of the episode is, once again, an attempt to make anyone who has never thought of astronomy as a career feel small and insignificant.  There are some pretty impressive panoramas on display here, the fun of staying out all night, all the good stuff about an overnight observation trip.

They forgot the mosquitoes...

Someone is feeling left out...

I should point out it's DARK out, what is she looking at?

We can tell where they are going with Fumie's character, but with this show, I have to wonder if it's a crush on Saku or a sudden discovery of star gazing that will win her over to the side of the astronomy club.  I'm guessing the latter.

For the record, the following ending scene is completely accurate.  I was the guy on the bottom right in 10th grade...

After 5AM, you can sleep on ANYTHING
