Princess Lover Series Wrap-up - Trainwreck
Monday, September 28, 2009 at 08:20PM
I sang the praises of this goofy gag harem show earlier. It turned some anime conventions on their head, putting the privileged few in the hero spot, fighting the bland, uncaring forces of the violent common man. So naturally, as this conflict got going full swing, we started the long slog into the series finale. To sum up - it was bad. But it was the sweet, unbelievable, sincere bad that you just have to watch, and at the end of it, all you can think is "I can't believe I just survived that!"
It's kinda like this:

You want to, but you can't look away...
The entire second half of the series, from episode 7 onward, is the culmination of the storyline. Using the first half to establish the characters and relationships and stereotypes, we put them into action now. Arima Hills (a thinly disguised Roppongi Hills if you know anything about Tokyo) finds itself Under Siege by a terrorist group bent on pretty much just blowing stuff up with an iPod. As Teppei drive to the rescue, each of the girls fall into their predictable roles. Yuu is the general. Sylvia is the soldier. Sieka is logistics. Charlotte is the damsel (in distress, naturally). There was some concern early on that this was taking the series into unneeded serious territory, but can any series be serious when it features a motorcycle with rocket powered legs?

Get me ZZ Top, stat!
While the entire perilous siege was a tad unbelievable, we move on with obvious plot twists as Charlotte is again taken hostage. At this point, we can see that there is nothing even remotely resembling logic in this show. We just had a massive military operation covered up with an idol concert, and after all this no one asks the driver of the first car that comes to pick up Charlotte for ID? Be on notice, if I point out every logic and plot hole from here on in, we will be here all day.

I doubt it could have contained this plot
The last three episodes are basically a repeat of the first three. Teppei has to rescue Charlotte from a train instead of a building. We follow a subtle formula of doubt followed by resolve followed by action packed finale. Subtle like a sucking chest wound.
So who's method of persuasion would you prefer:

The silliness here reaches it's crescendo with the villain, who not only has done all this for petty revenge against Grandpa Arima, the slight he seeks to avenge is getting caught trying to pickpocket Grandpa. He then proceeds to shot the woman who loves him three times, yet fails to shoot ANYONE else. And just to top it off, he's the guy who murdered Teppei's parents. This guy is the total package.

OK, this show has some redeeming values
So naturally, Teppei forgives him all this in the name of universal harmony and understanding, jumps out of an exploding train and falls 200 meters onto a moving motorcycle and rides off into the sunset. Good LORD I wish I had made that up...
This is a series that has to be experienced to be believed. I would watch it all in one sitting if you can, waiting a week between episodes will just make you forget what you are getting yourself into. You may come out the other side...changed.
